PPM License Fee Calculator For Businesses In Malaysia

License fees from Recording Performers Malaysia Berhad (PPM) are calculated using tariff formulas that start with an activity-specific minimum fee and add on relevant surcharges.

To help estimate your music license fees, we’ve created two calculators based on PPM’s tariffs for:

• featured / non-featured entertainment when the business itself plays copyrighted music
• reproduction when the business allows customers to play copyrighted music

Featured / non-featured entertainment

Reproduction

PPM recognises five different types of activities under reproduction:

• executive karaoke room is commercial karaoke with premium drinks and no children allowed
• family karaoke is commercial karaoke with non-premium drinks and suitable for children
• jukebox is an automated device allowing patrons to pay to play selections from stored recordings
• stand-alone karaoke means an interactive singing device functioning independently in an open area
• karaoke kiosk box is a small commercial booth for karaoke accommodating up to three persons

These are then separated into four different categories each with different fees.

Don’t forget your other music licenses!

Where PPM collects for record labels, two other bodies regulate the use of copyrighted music in Malaysia:

• Recording Performers Malaysia Berhad (RPM) for original performers, and
• Music Authors Copyright Protection Berhad (MACP) for music creators

There is a high chance that in addition to a PPM license, you will also need licenses from RPM and MACP, so be sure to do your due diligence, or let us do it for you!
