complete guide to cidb contractor grades

A Glance At CIDB Contractor Grades

Local contractors registering with CIDB are classified into seven grades (from G1 to G7) with each successive grade allowing a contractor to undertake higher value construction projects.

blank cheque as a joke about how contractors with g7 CIDB grade have no project value limit
G7 is basically a blank cheque.

The higher the grade, the stricter the requirements, ensuring contractors are matched with suitable projects – and they can always move up in grade upon fulfilling the requirements!

Our guide provides a complete overview of CIDB’s grading system for local contractors in Malaysia, breaking it down as follows:

  • mnimum requirements for each grade
  • project values, and
  • registration / renewal costs

Otherwise, let’s begin!

Minimum requirements for each grade

To simplify for clarity, there are three types of requirements:

  • paid up capital

  • ongoing performance (for renewal)

CCD points

This criteria is less to do with new registrations and more about renewals.

The Contractor Continuous Development or CCD is a program designed to ensure that contractors registered with CIDB remain up to date.

CIBD registered contractors must earn a certain number of CCD points within a year to qualify for renewal.

Common ways to accumulate CCD points include:

  • Attending programs that involve knowledge enhancement, forums, seminars, and courses
  • Participation in relevant associations
  • Contributions to knowledge programs as speakers, panelists, or related roles, and
  • Social and civic contributions

If there are fewer than 120 days remaining on the current CIDB license, the contractor can combine a grade change request with their renewal application, and fees are as follows.

Type of FeeFee
Grade ChangeRM50.00
DowngradeRM100.00
UpgradeDifference between new grade’s annual fee and previous grade’s renewal fee

The only exception is a downgrade to G1 if SPKK-registered which revokes the SPKK certificate.
